Alan Costello
Members from Northern Union Branch of the BSAC returned to Egypt and re visited the wreck of the Rosalie Moller to leave a lasting tribute in the form of a Memorial plaque.
The plaque read “In Memory of Alan Costello born 28/1/56, lost on the Rosalie Moller 20/5/08 “so long and thanks for the fish” And was taken from the “hitchhikers guide to the galaxy” and was in reference to his love of diving in that no matter how bad a day’s diving he may have had, due to bad weather etc, he would always say to his family on his return “It’s a good job I love fish.” They felt that this was how they wanted him to be remembered, humorous and with a great love of diving.
The memorial will be seen by many divers visiting the site in future years, and will be a fitting tribute to this well loved and experienced diver.
The members of the club would like to thank Geoff Cornelius, Fred Tones and Brian Gilgeous for their help and support. Thanks also to Tornado Marine Fleet and Tony Backhurst Scuba Travel for sponsoring and arranging the trip.
The diving club are holding a fundraiser on the 15th August this was to fund a further search once permission was received from the Egyptian government, this now seems unlikely so long after the event. It is intended that any profits from the fundraiser will go into an “Alan Costello Memorial fund” at the request of Alan’s wife, the purpose of the fund - to help any other divers families who tragically may find themselves in a similar situation.
